Here’s an example
A person has a modest loss. They know the full harm and consider small claims court.
A made-up example to explain the idea. Your facts may lead to a different answer. How the rule works
Small claims court is meant for cases within set limits. Its forms and hearing rules differ from larger civil cases. Use the court’s current guide to check what fits before choosing this path.

The dollar limit is only one check
A small claims case follows a different process from a regular civil lawsuit. Check the court’s current limit and whether it applies to the kind of person or business bringing the case.
Before choosing that process, consider the full loss and whether more harm may become clear. Pitzen shows that a small claims ruling can affect later issues. Do not assume you can split one dispute into several cases without consequences.
If the dispute concerns only repairs, compare a vehicle-damage-only claim.
For a different court path, read the regular civil lawsuit process.
What can change the answer?
The current limits and who is suing matter. Future losses may make the claim worth more. Filing for a smaller amount can affect what you recover.
Court decisions behind this answer
A case can help explain a rule. Its facts and limits matter too.
Pitzen v. Superior Court
California Court of Appeal · 2004
120 Cal.App.4th 1374, p. 1377
One small-claims plaintiff tried to retry an issue they had clearly lost. The court did not allow that.
This is not a rule for every later case or every small-claims defendant. Check the parties and issues.
Case applicability reviewed as recorded above.
